A Haddonfield doctor’s whistleblower lawsuit sparked an investigation that ended in a multimillion dollar settlement payment by Cooper Health System.
HADDONFIELD-HADDON TOWNSHIP, NJ -- Cooper Health System will pay $12.6 million to settle allegations the Camden hospital engaged in kickbacks to doctors as it built its cardiology program, state and federal officials said Thursday. Cooper agreed to pay the federal government $10.2 million and the state $2.3 million in the joint settlement, plus attorney’s fees of $430,000 to a whistleblower, Haddonfield cardiologist Dr. Nicholas DePace. The hospital also already implemented, and agreed to maintain, corporate reforms for accountability, training and other aspects of compliance. Haddonfield's Dr. Nicholas DePace had considered the building to house his world-class sports memorabilia collection.
“It sounded like the worst car accident ever,” said Louis Alberta, describing the noise that woke him at quarter after four in the morning last Wednesday in Collingswood. Alberta, who owns Bauhaus Hair Design Studio, looked out the window of his Haddon Avenue apartment atop Healthworks Market and saw “a huge pile of rubble on the ground”—remnants of the façade of the old TD Bank building at 765 Haddon Ave. He called the non-emergency services number, and watched as police and firefighters arrived on the scene. “I’m sure nothing like that’s ever happened in this town before,” he says. “I could hear the cops saying ‘how did this happen?’” Healthworks owner Rick Guerriero says he saw another piece of the façade fall when he came into the shop…

Haddonfield doctor Nicholas DePace has a world-class sports memorabilia collection featuring Joe Frazier's boxing gear. DePace and Frazier were friends.
The planned Nicholas DePace sports museum on Haddon Avenue in Collingswood will feature the robe and trunks Frazier wore before his signature fight with Muhammad Ali in 1971. Frazier was a patient of Dr. DePace's and a friend, he said. DePace is a cardiologist. Frazier, a former heavyweight boxing champion, died Monday following a brief bout with liver cancer. DePace's collection also features a rare Honus Wagner baseball card from 1910 which he bought from an order of nuns last December.

Dr. Nicholas DePace's collection includes artifacts such as game-worn apparel from sports greats like boxers Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali, including Frazier's robe and trunks worn to a weigh-in before his title fight with Ali in 1971. Frazier is a patient of DePace's and a friend, the doctor said. Other items in the collection include apparel from Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Roberto Clemente, Jackie Robinson and Joe DiMaggio. DePace even has DiMaggio's marriage license to Marilyn Monroe, their passport pictures and divorce decree, he said. Nicholas DePace plans to open a museum in Collingswood for his world-class sports memorabilia collection, which includes a rare 1910 Honus Wagner baseball card.
It was dubbed the Christmas Miracle when a Haddonfield cardiologist swooped in at the eleventh hour last year to buy a rare baseball card from an order of Baltimore nuns days before Christmas. But the 1910 Honus Wagner baseball card wasn’t the first item in the collection of Dr. Nicholas DePace. In fact, DePace’s collection of sports and entertainment memorabilia was called "one of the great collections in the country, probably the world," in a Philadelphia Inquirer story in December. Haddonfield collector brings Christmas cheer to an order of nuns.
Dr. Nicholas DePace calls it a "Christmas Miracle." That's how he describes his decision to spend $220,000 on "The Holy Grail" of baseball cards after another collector reneged on a Texas auction-house bid. The Haddonfield cardiologist was among the original bidders for the 100-year-old Honus Wagner card that was willed to a Baltimore order of nuns. They were selling it to raise money for overseas relief work. DePace stepped in on Dec. 20 when a Tennessee man who owns a chain of sports-card stores backed out.
