Eight wrestlers from Haddon Township and eight from Haddonfield made it through to the semifinals of the tournament.
As the a No. 2 seed in the NJSIAA District 28 Wrestling Tournament it could be easy for Haddon Township High School’s Mike McCutcheon to look ahead and wonder who may be awaiting him in the finals. However, McCutcheon is too wise for that, knowing what the repercussions of one slip up could mean. One momentary lapse of judgment in a quarterfinal matchup can leave a wrestler on his back, bringing a sudden end to his season. Jake Klaus, Henry Klaus, Mike McCuthceon and Tim Wolf each earned a No. 1 seed for this weekend's District 28 Tournament.
Henry Klaus and Jake Klaus piled up victory after victory even as the Haddonfield Memorial High School wrestling team struggled through a sub-.500 season. They were rewarded for their continued hard work this week when the NJSIAA released its District 28 Wrestling Tournament seeds. Each Klaus earned a No. 1 seed, as did Haddon Township’s Mike McCutcheon and Tim Wolf. The four standouts headline a large contingency of local athletes who earned seeds suggesting a top-three finish and trip to regions will be in their future. Jake Klaus (19-8) is the top seed at 132-pounds, while Henry (22-3) has the top spot at 182. The Haddon Township High School girls’ basketball team didn’t get a whole lot of practice sessions in last week; they were too busy winning games. The Hawks went 4-0 in a busy week, increasing their standing as one of the top teams in the Colonial Conference. Meanwhile, the wrestling team won a pair of lopsided matches and the swimming regular season came to an end. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL All season long the Hawks have defied the odds by having continued success with five underclassmen in their starting lineup. That trend continued last week as the team’s youth came in handy during a four-games-in-six-nights stretch. The wrestling team went 3-0 heading into today's showdown with Paulsboro.
It was a big week for the Haddon Township High School wrestling team which went 3-0, including a win against Haddonfield. Meanwhile, the boys’ basketball team snapped a small losing skid with a landslide win. WRESTLING It is no secret that the road to a Colonial Conference Patriot Division title runs through Paulsboro. The Hawks are ready to test that road today when it travels to take on the traditional wrestling powerhouse—and they are entering that game with a host of momentum. Senior Renato Paoli recorded a pin in Haddon Township's win over Haddonfield.
For four years, Haddon Township High School wrestler Renato Paoli has spent workout after workout wondering what it would be like to score a victory over a rival wrestler from Haddonfield. It is a thought that has driven him past the sweat and through the exhaustion. “Every time I run and go up and down the steps in my school, it is so I can beat Haddonfield,” Paoli said. “That’s all I work for.” Paoli got that elusive victory Friday night and it couldn’t have been a bigger moment. Paoli pinned Haddonfield’s William Benedict in three minutes, 18 seconds to clinch a 39-21 win for the Hawks.
