The former Audubon High School star threw three touchdowns in a 34-31 win for Baltimore over San Francisco in Super Bowl XLVII.
South Jersey's own Joe Flacco won the MVP award Sunday, leading his Baltimore Ravens over the San Francisco 49ers, 34-31, in Super Bowl XLVII. Flacco, an Audubon High School grad and University of Delaware star, completed 22 of 33 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns to win the Most Valuable Player award in a game that came down to the last seconds. Flacco flew more than 40 relatives, some of whom live in Haddon Township, to New Orleans to watch the game in a local restaurant. His parents actually attended the game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Flacco family has close ties to Haddon Township. Three players from the Colonial Conference will have the chance to earn a Super Bowl ring Sunday.
By now, the story of Joe Flacco’s rise from a starting quarterback at Audubon High School to NFL quarterback is pretty well known. What may be overlooked, though, is that Flacco is not the only South Jersey native competing in the Super Bowl on Sunday. In fact, he is one of three players on the Ravens who hail from the Colonial Conference playing for a Super Bowl ring. Bryant McKinnie, who spent just two seasons at Woodbury High School, is the Ravens' starting left tackle, while Alex Silvestro, who played for Paulsboro High School, is on the Ravens' practice squad as a tight end. There's very little doubt who the locals will be pulling for when Super Bowl XLVII kicks off at 6:30 p.m. tonight. Of course, the Philadelphia Eagles are nowhere near the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans today. But there is an Eagles connection. Haddon Township senior Kim Flacco will be one of 60 of Joe's family and friends heading down to watch the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
The Huck Finn’s Restaurant and Sports Bar is known for having some of the best shrimp po-boys and jambalaya in New Orleans. It’s also known as a great place to catch a sporting event with friends. By Sunday night, it may be known as the new home of the Joe Flacco Fan Club. Haddon Township High School senior Kim Flacco is one of about 60 of Joe’s family members and friends hopping on a plane today and heading to New Orleans. Joe is picking up the tab to ensure he'll have the people who mean the most to him as close as possible, including his cousin Kim. Haddon Township field hockey player Kim Flacco was named to the All-South Jersey Second Team.
Kim Flacco knows a thing or two about athletic excellence. She was selected as a First-Team All-Colonial Conference field hockey player as a sophomore and junior, and most recently was chosen as a Second Team All-South Jersey member by the Field Hockey Club of South Jersey. “It’s really cool,” Flacco said. “It’s definitely an honor.” Residents of Haddon Township and those nearby in Audubon have come to expect nothing less from a member of the Flacco family. Athletic genes seem to flow rather naturally though the Flacco family.
