On the article Voters Size Up Commissioners Candidates After Debate

Replyp.s. let's not let a small stipend get in the way of electing a great commissioner. Seriously, should we decide whether or not to vote for someone based on the nominal stipend? I respect what each candidate either does or plans to do with the taxpayers' money. If any of you volunteer, you know it is out of love, passion and good old work ethic. Valid points were made last night about the expenses that the commissioners have here and there, and I think they have every right to get a bit of help with that. Seriously, none of them are in it for the money...all of you active volunteers out there know that :0)

ReplyOops! Bill, in the rush of post-debate interviews, I think you got my age wrong--ouch! I am 43, not 45, and not only a former teacher, but 'homemaker' with two part-time jobs and a part time 'job' in the volunteer capacity. No problem, Bill, I still love ya! Keep the coverage coming! ;0)

ReplyThe comments shared are all thought- and action-provoking, thank you! Has Haddonfield considered asking neighboring towns how they keep their Bus. Dist. clean, landscaped and maintained? Maybe there is a model out there that works. Seems we should have it down after 300 years. So very glad there is conversation about this because this is a topic near and dear to me, being one of those volunteers who tries to beautify Haddonfield areas. One great (but also bad...) thing about our community is that we can easily generate a lot if volunteers to fix a problem, but what about the long-term? How long can we rely on $500 a year and countless volunteer hours, and a coordinator to manage all of those volunteers? We ARE an amazing group of people who will work together; problem is, our leaders have heard about us...it's no secret that we will use our volunteer time and talents over and over and over again until what happens? The fire dies out, the volunteers are burnt out and the ashes remain until another 'movement' blows in for another round. The cycle continues. Volunteers are important in all communities, but we also need to create a model that works for the long haul (and doesn't depend so heavily on our generous citizens).

ReplyI am sorry for those residents who do not want the sidewalks, and for the residents of Haddonfield who actually NEED and USE sidewalks and crosswalks in this town. How unprofessional for our Mayor to criticize Jeff Kasko for not 'supporting pedestrian safety'... What is happening over in Boro Hall?

ReplyUnfortunately, there were not enough of us speaking against the proposal at the meeting last night--it would have been nice to have these thoughts shared publicly. Only a hand-full of us brought up the questions that needed to be answered, as in your posts. It was one giant popularity contest, and when money talks, the people listen. Where was the Planning Board? The Zoning Board? Environmental Commission? Correct government procedures were not followed here, and now the boro has promised this $$ if the 'private' group can raise another $250k. It's not finished yet! Also, I do not know if there is a deadline for meeting this goal--that would be nice to know. I do know one thing: the boro has set a precedent, so they better be prepared for groups to start asking for $$ for their projects!

ReplyThis news nauseates me. What is wrong with our town? How can the town/school district spend that much $$ on something that serves a specific audience--only a fraction of our population. I am in ire when I think about the outsourced mediocre-questionably loyal custodians, trash collectors, the horrible condition of our library and public parks/spaces--have you seen the weed beds surrounding each tree in front of the downtown businesses--now THAT's a way to attract businesses!? And what about the paint crumbling from the auditorium and the ghetto-like condition of it!? The folks who raised all of that $$ are probably bleeding at the nails for all of their efforts to make a nice auditorium--I hope they got the same % of sup[port for their project from the BOE and boro...I doubt they did. The list goes on and on...including how difficult it is to get the boro to do anything to help with the Safe Walking campaign at Tatem elem. Why can't keeping kids safe when walking and biking to school get $54k to strip crosswalks or Grove street, hire an afternoon crossing guard, and many more things..?! This town is going to pot, but we sure will have nice turf field to sit on while everything else overgrows or crumbles around us.

I am still hoping that the BOE and Boro will hire (using their current shared services agreement) a TURF MANAGEMENT EXPERT to take care of not only the new field, but the existing fields and parks, which is exactly what an expert like that is trained to do. I often wonder if a Turf Management Expert had been employed years ago, would our fields be such a mess? Perhaps we could have tried that strategy first. If you'd like to to learn more about turf management profession and college programs/internships and how an expert can help our town/school grounds, visit http://turf-management-jobs.rutgers.edu/ or simply Google "Turf Management"--there is so much information out there about this career and I am convinced that until recently, none of our BOE or town leaders were aware this field (no pun intended) even existed. Hiring a turf expert is a win-win for everyone--in the schools and the boro.
