Kai, 'Hatchet-Wielding Hitchhiker,' May Be Defended by High-Profile Attorney

Caleb McGillvary is an accused killer caught with the help of Haddonfield police.

High-profile Clifton attorney Miles Feinstein said he will make a decision by the end of this week as to whether he will represent Caleb McGillvary, aka Kai the Hitchhiker, in the murder of Clark resident Joseph Galfy.

McGillvary was captured with the help of Haddonfield police, who followed up on reports he was seen in the borough on May 14. He was arrested in Philadelphia two days later.

"There are some things about the case that interest me," Feinstein told Patch. "My investigator went to see him, and I'm going to see him this week."

Feinstein has more than 45 years experience as a criminal defense attorney and has worked on several landmark cases. He is currently defending Joe Giudice, husband of "Real Housewife of NJ" Teresa Guidice, against charges he posed as his brother to obtain a driver’s license.

Feinstein said he has spoken to his McGillvary's father and other Kai fans raising money for his defense, but has yet to be formally retained.

In June, a public defender entered a plea of not guilty for McGillvary, 24. He is being held on $3 million bail.

Galfy was found in his Clark home on Monday, May 13 after hosting McGillvary overnight on Saturday and Sunday. Police say that McGillvary murdered Galfy, who was found in his underwear and socks, severely beaten. McGillvary was arrested in Philadelphia on May 16.

For his part, in a May 14 post on his Facebook page, McGillvary alleges that he was drugged and raped, and asks readers, "what would you do?"

McGillvary became an Internet sensation in February: After saving a Fresno woman by smashing her attacker in the head with his hatchet, McGillvary’s offbeat personality in an interview made for a YouTube video that garnered nearly 4 million views (see it here - warning, contains profanity). He also recently appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
